Click! - The power of a perfect fit

This week, I enjoyed listening to my good friend Sandy Ogg's new podcast, "Sandy on Talent." Sandy's insights on connecting talent to value, which he developed while serving as CHRO at Unilever, applied at Blackstone, honed at McKinsey, and eventually turned into his company, CEO.Works, have always resonated with me. As I reflected on his message and our many conversations over the years, three key insights emerged: the critical importance of matching the right person to the proper role, the transformative power of playing to one's unique strengths, and the symbiotic relationship between individual and organizational success that is unlocked when talent is perfectly aligned with the needs of the role.

Sandy's "Click!" concept – recognizing that a specific talent is a perfect match for a high-value role – is a game-changer in leadership and talent management. When we take the time to truly understand the essential jobs to be done within our organizations and then deliberately match the person best suited to each critical role based on their unique abilities and passions, we create an environment where individuals can thrive, and organizations can soar to new heights. By focusing on each person's distinctive strengths and abilities and connecting them with opportunities to make the most significant impact, we tap into a wellspring of potential that might otherwise go unnoticed or underutilized. And we can’t overestimate the power of the perfect fit; they might unlock multiple times more value than another who is only a great fit. We don’t need to go through this process for all roles, but for the most crucial value-creating roles this approach can make all the difference in fueling an organization’s collective success.

Have you ever been in a role that wasn’t a great fit? I have, and no matter how much I redoubled my effort, I could never achieve what I hoped. It was certainly a drain for me, and also for the company. When individuals are placed in roles that play to their strengths and ignite their passions, they experience a profound sense of engagement, energy, and motivation. They are more likely to bring their whole selves to work, to take risks, and to push the boundaries of what's possible. This positive energy is contagious, spreading throughout the organization and creating a culture of excellence, innovation, and growth.
