A 90-Year Leadership Journey
December 18, 2024In life, we often look to great business leaders like Alan Mulally for examples of exceptional leadership. But sometimes, the most profound lessons can be found closer to home. This past week, as we celebrated my mother's 90th birthday, I reflected on her life and accomplishments. I realized that she had applied the same leadership principles as Alan did at Ford Motor Company, but rather than at a multibillion-dollar business, she did so in the context of building and raising a family. Born in 1934 and growing up in Connecticut during World War II, she faced unique challenges and limited opportunities as a woman in a post-war world. Yet, she managed to create a thriving family by setting a vision, creating a supportive environment, and nurturing our potential.
My mother had a clear idea of the kind of family she wanted to create—a family of kind, considerate people who would build their own independent lives while enriching the lives of those around them. This vision guided her actions and decisions as she navigated the challenges of parenthood and family life. By consistently communicating and modeling these values, she instilled them in us, shaping our character and setting the foundation for our future success. Her unwavering commitment to this vision, even in the face of societal constraints and personal challenges, demonstrates the power of a strong sense of purpose in leadership. She understood that a clear and compelling vision, consistently pursued, could transform lives and create a lasting legacy.
To support her vision, my mother intentionally built a community of like-minded people around our family. She was selective about the influences we were exposed to and the opportunities we had, ensuring that they aligned with her values and goals. By maintaining strong connections with our extended family, she created an environment of support and stability that allowed us to thrive. The close family friends she cultivated became lifelong companions, enriching our lives and reinforcing the importance of strong relationships. This ability to foster a sense of community and belonging is a hallmark of great leadership, whether in a family or an organization. She recognized that no one achieves success alone, and that by surrounding ourselves with people who share our values and aspirations, we create a powerful network of support and inspiration.
Perhaps most importantly, my mother gave us the unique support we needed to succeed. She recognized our talents and aspirations and quietly nurtured them with love, guidance, and resources. From music lessons and sports activities to trips to New York for cultural experiences and New Hampshire for outdoor adventures, she created opportunities for us to grow and explore. However, the most significant gift she gave us was the unconditional love and support of our grandparents, parents, and relatives. At the time, it seemed effortless, but upon reflection, it's clear how much effort she put into organizing family events, creating opportunities for friends to gather, and making our home a welcoming place for all. This kind of individualized attention and support is essential for unlocking the full potential of those we lead. By taking the time to understand each person's unique strengths, challenges, and dreams, we can tailor our leadership to their needs and help them achieve their best.
In life and leadership, the most valuable lessons often come from those closest to us. My mother's 90-year journey has taught me that great leadership is not limited to the boardroom or the battlefield. It can be found in the quiet, consistent actions of those who shape our lives and communities. For those we lead and love, we can draw inspiration from the example set by individuals like my mother, who demonstrate that leadership is about setting a vision, creating a supportive environment, and nurturing the potential of others. As we celebrate her 90 years, let us also celebrate the profound impact that everyday leaders have on our world, and strive to embody the same principles in our own lives and leadership. By doing so, we honor the legacy of those who have gone before us, and create a brighter future for those who will follow.
With love, gratitude, and wonder,
Scott
